How Apple’s Packaging Revolutionized Minimalistic Design In A Modern Era

How Apple’s Packaging Revolutionized Minimalistic Design In A Modern Era

We all know and love Apple packaging for its sleek, distinctive, and minimalistic design aesthetic. Steve Jobs' innovative mindset not only revolutionized technology and its capabilities but also acted as a pioneer for minimalistic design. As a result, Apple's design is more straightforward than it is ostentatious. This refined design principle has guaranteed that despite its no-frills and uncomplicated design strategy, the brand’s packaging is stunning enough to appeal to a broad demographic while forging innovation and simultaneously sets Apple apart from other brands.

Jobs always had a passion for Joseph Eichler's real estate developments and how they allowed lower-income households to have homes that were both elegant and reasonably priced but also featured a clean aesthetic. This mindset was carried over into Jobs' packaging and product design style, and as the headline of Apple's first marketing brochure declared in 1977, "Simplicity is the ultimate sophistication."

Jobs publicly announced his respect for the Bauhaus aesthetic in a talk at the 1983 Aspen design conference, whose theme was "The Future Isn't What It Used to Be." In this talk, he indicated that Bauhaus simplicity would soon be the norm, and that the world would soon move away from industrial design and into a functional design space that appreciates the less is more approach, similar to Eichler's belief that design can be elegant, functional, and approachable.

In this talk, Jobs declared on Apple's behalf, "What we're going to do is make the products high-tech, and we're going to package them cleanly so that you know they're high-tech. We will fit them in a small package, and then we can make them beautiful and white, just like Braun does with its electronics." Thus, Jobs revolutionized the packaging world by proving that the status quo isn't always definitive. By transitioning the technology packaging from what it was known as: industrial, dark, and monotonous to a space that became lighter and cleaner, packaging was forever changed for the better.

Embracing minimalism in design is now something we see every day, thanks to Jobs' trailblazing mindset and ability to push the unexpected. Of course, developing computers and devices that were elegant, simple, and beautiful were the priority, but continuing the brand's mission for sleek minimalism continued beyond the product.

In fact, the team was so dedicated to creating memorable packaging that one of Apple's packaging designers spent months opening and closing boxes to examine the packaging of their competition as well as test the hundreds of box prototypes created by the Apple packaging team. The objective was to create an outstanding and unforgettable unboxing experience.

By continuing the extension through packaging and focusing on the consumer’s unboxing experience, the brand's outstanding commitment to functional design was proven. This holistic approach is something brands now strive for, further demonstrating the power of packaging as a branding extension. Of course, focusing on a well executed product is important, but the way this product is packaged can forever change your brand for the better and Apple is a prime example of this.
